At DBC, coaching is in our DNA 🚀
Everyone here has access to a project coach to support them on their engagements, and a career coach to help them grow professionally. And it’s not a one-way street: we can also, in turn, become a coach to a colleague. Coaching flows both ways, at every level.
Many of you are probably already familiar with The Coaching Habit by Michael Bungay Stanier, a classic in the field. Stanier starts from a simple observation: we tend to give advice too quickly, a reflex he calls the “Advice Monster.” Yet the real value of coaching comes from asking the right questions at the right time.
Here are some of the key principles from the book:
- Start with THE question: “What’s on your mind?”
- Dig deeper than the first answer, which is often superficial, by simply asking “And what else?”
- Help the person name the real challenge behind the situation, not just the surface problem.
- Clarify what the person actually wants.
- Resist the urge to fix everything yourself, and ask instead: “How can I help?”
- Help them realize that saying yes to one thing often means saying no to another.
- End every conversation by asking what was most useful, to reinforce the learning.
That’s what we strive to cultivate at DBC: fewer ready-made answers, more questions that help people grow.
